Just got a new Pentium4 machine with 1 GB of DDRAM
installed. When I go into the Control Panel, Windows XP
(Pro) only reports 893 MB of memory installed .........
where is the rest?

Hi

Have you got any on-board sound or video?

Open your BIOS and see if you have an onboard video adapter
designed to share memory.

Yes I do ........ both the sound and video are integrated
on the Asus P4R800-VM motherboard ...... how does this
affect the amount of memory available to Windows?

Thanks,

Hi

Have a look in the manual for the motherboard - which you should have
received - that came with your PC. That will give you details of the
on-board devices and the way they use RAM.

A search would have found you your answer. Your on-board video is using
128MB of your RAM. This is why no-one uses on-board graphics. On-board chips
don't have any memory of their own, so they use physical RAM.

Many people use onboard video. And with 1GB of RAM that should not be much
of a problem.

And not all integrated video circuits use system RAM, some have their
own memory.

Check your RAM cards are installed correctly unplug and
replug them while computer is off, then restart.
If you have only just put in more Ram sticks, your CMOS
may not be recognising it you may need to move the jumper
next to where the disc drives plug into the motherboard,
start and stop the computer to clear memory then move the
jumper back and restart to get the cmos to re-read the
Ranm size also make sure the Ram is all the same brand
don't mix RAM.

Do you read before spouting crap?! It would appear not. He has on board
video, that's where his missing RAM's gone.

You're right, I shouldn't have put it like that. What I meant to say was
"that's why many people don't like on-board video".
