Are you installing fresh with a format first? Or trying to upgrade?

128MB is insufficient to run Widows XP.

FWIW, there is no such thing as 1998second edition. It is Windows 98 SE.

Just for future reference 128mb is sufficiant according to microsoft,
however i would strongly advise that you upgrade to get the full benifits
from xp as you will be running a very slow system. 256mb is ideally minimum.
Go to www.crucial.com and run a scan. This will tell you exactly what kind of
ram you need. An upgrade should be fine however if i were you another way of
doing it is to go into your BIOS and set the CDROM to be the first starting
device so the system will "boot from CD" and you can immediatly install from
there.

Let me know if this helps

stargazer please tell me these all in easy steps and were to find the stuff to delete. im sorry for this im not very smart with computers.

Ok, stargazer is trying to explain what you will see when you boot from CD.
This means as soon as the computer is turned on, the computer will boot the
cd first ahead of anything else. Therefore if you have the windows cd in the
drive then setup will run. If you run the cd from windows you will get
different prompts as it will be a wizard. UPGRADE keeps your files as in
ADVANCED (i think this is the other option) will wipe everything and give you
a clean install.

I am not sure what stage you are having problems with or where you are up
to. Let me know.

link:

http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/cleanxpinstall.html#steps

This does things fairly step by step, and includes snapshots of the
screens you will see (click on them to show them, they are on the
left of the page). So it should "walk you through it." Remember
that a clean install will wipe everything from your machine. So if
there is any data that you wish to retain, then get it off the
machine before you do a clean XP install.

There are probably many other "how to's" out there on installing XP so
if anyone has any that are better than this one, share it.

Have you verified that all of your PC's hardware components are
capable of supporting WinXP? This information will be found at the PC's
manufacturer's web site, and on Microsoft's Windows Catalog:

You should also take a few minutes to ensure that there are
WinXP-specific device drivers available for all of the machine's
components. There may not be, if the PC was specifically designed for
Win98/Me. Also bear in mind that PCs designed for, sold and run fine
with Win9x/Me very often do not meet WinXP's much more stringent
hardware quality requirements. This is particularly true of many models
in Compaq's consumer-class Presario product line or HP's consumer-class
Pavilion product line. WinXP, like WinNT and Win2K before it, is quite
sensitive to borderline defective or substandard hardware (particularly
motherboards, RAM and hard drives) that will still support Win9x.
