I'm getting this error message when turning my computer
on. It is on a black background and doesn't go to the
startup until I press F1Boot. Two days ago, I added
Windows Service Pack for XP. I wasn't having any
problems prior to that time. I've run several virus
scans and nothing comes up.

How do I solve this?

Thank you for your time.

Although Self Monitoring Analysis And Reporting Technology(S.M.A.R.T) may seem like an excellent tool it is often more of a hinderence than a help. I have mine turned off in the BIOS. Go to the link at the top and find the manufacturer of your HDD and get their diagnostic and repair tool. Most of them require you to have a floppy handy that you can put the tool on and then you will need to boot with the floppy in it's drive and follow the on screen prompts. Many of them will fix whatever is wrong. Let us know how you make out. {:~)

Thank you for your advice. Could you tell me more
specifically where I could find this link for
the "diagnostic and repair tool"? (I'm not too
technologically savvy.)
