Our computer was hit with 6 viruses and knocked out the internet connection
with the ethernet card. Now the only internet connection working is the cable
modem connection. The connection right now is a frustratingly slow 28.8 mbps.
Does anyone know how this can be fixed or corrected? I tried updating the
driver for the ethernet card and still nothing.

You refer to a 169 address but do not detail in the post.
Probably of value to run ipconfig /all and post results
If the card is not functioning how are you accessing the cable modem? Speed
of 28.8 almost suggests an old modem card.

I'd look for LSP / Winsock corruption first.

But please do explain why the cable modem connection is not affected by an
Ethernet problem.

I'm very curious myself as to why the Cable Modem wasn't affected, but the
address of the network card was. I know at one point when we were removing
viruses, the connectivity of the modem was compromised, but I fixed that by
updating the driver of the network card. However, when I got the internet
back, it still ran slow. I was only trying to fix it because we were trying
get a wireless network going with the desktop and my new laptop computer.

Who knows, though. It may just be a winsock problem.
