Today I booted my XP machine and Zone Alarm claimed that it had detected a
new wireless network 169.254.0.0 and brought up the New Network wizard.
That was the first I had ever heard of that. I googled that IP and found a
page that describes "How to configure a Windows machine for Rendezvous
devices, How to configure a Windows machine that has a global IP address so
it can also talk to link-local devices on that network." Another site
mentions "Automatic Private IP Addressing (APIPA) address space of
169.254.0.0/16"

I rebooted and it didn't come back. Can anyone tell me what's going on?

Your computer likely could not connect to your DHCP server for whatever
reason. So windows defaulted to the APIPA address (169.254.xxx.xxx). Was
your DHCP server up and running?, Were all your connections good?

Hi Jim
If your xp pc searches for but is unable to obtain a real ip address from a
dhcp server then it automatically gives itself an IP address like the one
you describe
If you get 0.0.0.0 then it never looked for a dhcp server.
You may get that occasionally, but you'd only worry about it if you got it
continuously.

BobC, Cheshire: You guys must be right. I booted two other machines this
morning with no problem. I guess that it was just a fluke that it couldn't
find an IP this one time. Thanks.

So, is the problem fixed? If so, how did you do it?

I am receiving the 169.254.x.x ip address too. It just
occurred.

What's the problem?

I just rebooted. Apparently it is a one time fluke for me. Try again and
see if it goes away.
