I have followed microsoft article 324767, but the stumbling block is the
Command.com file.
Item 6 says it may have to be expanded from Win XP Cd-rom. How is this done?
Especially as a search doesn`t show a Command.com file on the CD?

Hi there JohnB,

Please try the steps below to resolve this error:

1. Click Start, run, type "repair" (with out quotation marks) and click OK.

Copy the Autoexec.nt and Config.nt files from here.

Note: To copy a file, right-click the file and select copy. You may copy one
file at a time.

Now, follow these steps to open the system 32 folder:

2. Click Start, run, type "system32" (with out quotation marks) and click OK.

In the resulting window, paste the copied files. Say YES to replace the
existing files.

Note: To paste a copied file, click Edit->Paste.

Many thanks. That has partly solved my problem, but I have found that the
autoexec.nt file is missing from the system 32 file upon rebooting.

It's caused by a virus/trojan which is probably erasing the file at startup.
