1517 Warning every shutdown/reboot

This post is made after reading as many posts on this subject 1st. However,
it seems there is at least one other symptom, in my situation, that is a bit
diffrent from the others that I read.

I believe that my registry is not clsed because some application(s) is(are)
"stuck" at startup and continue being stuck until shutdown. After loading at
least one update on my pc, at least two applications no longer show in the
systray. They show as processes running however. And of course, I have the
famous 1517 warning regarding the registry. These two symptoms are definitely
linked.

So.... can someone help me with this? I think I need to have a way to trace
what is going on at startup. Is there a way to track of log it? Am I on the
right track?

UPHCleanup Service removes this error. It is caused by a service
running under the user credentials instead of system credentials thus
giving an error when the system tries to unload the user profile. This
service works by handling the problem instead of just waiting for
timeout.

If my memory serves me correct.

If you see a lot of Userenv/1517, Userenv/1524 or Userenv/1500 errors in the
Event Viewer, download and install the User Profile Hive Cleanup Service.

This decreased my shutdown time a bunch. Takes any where from 10 to 20
seconds to shutdown.

C:\Program Files\UPHClean\uphclean.exe is added.

The User Profile Hive Cleanup service gets added to Services and
uphclean.exe wiil run all the time. I am one that doesn't like to have any
extra services running, but I am sold on UPHClean.

You can screw around and try to trace the problem if you want.

Or just install the User Profile Hive Cleanup Service and save a lot of time
and trouble.

OK, Tried the UPHClean route and waited a while to see if anything
improved... NOT.

The problem really seems to be that an application is "stuck" and won't let
some other apps complete their install at startup. Sorry, it's hard to
describe.

So.... perhaps someone can tell me what is the best way to watch what's
happening as the system starts up and installs each app.

It's really bugging me that my virus protection and batter indicator icons
are not in the systray!!!

Are you getting these in the Event Viewer?

Event ID 1001 UPHClean started
and
Event ID 1201 UPHClean following handles in user profile hive

Or are you getting Event ID 1211 UPHClean handles could not be closed?

Or are you using the reporting only mode?

IMHO, the reporting only mode is a waste of time.

[[You can install and remove UPHClean to find out whether it helps with a
profile unload problem or not. Set it and forget is the goal of UPHClean.]]

WebClient and Workstation Services seem to be causing the problem. When I
disable them, the symptoms go away. Read below to find out how I found out.

So now what??? How do I fix them rather than keep them disabled and what am
I missing by keeping them disabled?

Ok, thanks for trying to help on this to you all. As I suspected the 1517
error message is a symptom too easily dismissed. The UPHClean will help in
some cases where a simple remap would suffice. It did nothing for my problem.

I had to run msconfig.exe to see what was happening. If there is another
tool that could help easier I'd appreciate knowing. I had to disable all
services, then enable them a few at a time, reboot, enable a few more,
reboot, iterate until done. If a service create the problem, disable and
continue to iterate. There are two services that cause the problem when
enabled.

Symptoms: several icons in the systray don't show up, but do show in the
task manager as running processes. The warning 1517 shows up on reboot.

Why were you running the WebClient service? Never mind, defaults to
Automatic in both SP1 and 2.

I have the WebClient service disabled.

Leave the WebClient service disabled until you find some reason to enable
it.

The Workstation service is LanmanWorkstation.

The Background Intelligent Transfer Service service depends on
LanmanWorkstation.

The Background Intelligent Transfer Service service is needed for Windows
Update.

The Workstation service is also needed for Local Users and Groups in XP Pro.

The Client for Microsoft Networks component is actually the Workstation
service.

You are much better off using services.msc to disable services than using
msconfig.

Why can't I use msconfig to change my services?
[[The reason is because with msconfig and Hardware Profiles, you can disable
services that may be vital to boot your system. With the management console
(services.msc) you cannot. Also, msconfig, while unchecking the box, is
disabling the service.

The "Disable All" button also scares me. It should not even be there as no
reason exists to justify disabling "everything."]]

Thanks Wesley!

Why WebClient is running? Beats the heck out of me why many of these
services are running. I didn't do it! I'd like to trim down to what I think
is necessary at some point.

It's this process that is much more important to me... the process of
finding the tools for getting to the problem. I don't like the ignoring the
problem or throwing things against the wall and seeing what sticks. Using
services.msc is better, thanks.

What I'm trying to find out now is what do these processes have in common
with each other... like using the same .DLL or something. Dead end so far. I
did a massive update when I got the system over the holiday, so one of them
must be the culprit. Question is, Which?
