For some reason, all my 1 x 1 windows are showing up maximized. When I
click the corner to unmaximize, the window disappears. How can I get a
small window again?

Also, on the taskbar item in the context menu, what is the option "Size"
for and how do I get it to work? I think it might somehow be related,
since it only shows up when my window has been de-maximized

Are you clicking the "Restore" button (middle one)?

Clicking the option turns the cursor into the 4-way arrow for resizing
the window..

When I click on either Restore or Maximize, that gives the "full" screen
back, but I can't resize the window to make it smaller.

Which doesn't work on a window that is invisible. ;)

Catch22 :(

I kinda suspect you are lacking something in the VB or C runtime files.
Or one or more of same may be messed up. 1by1 uses...

COMCTL32.DLL
COMDLG.32.DLL
CRTDLL.DLL
GDI32.DLL
KERNEL32.DLL
MSACM.DLL (unless you configured it to use MPGLIB.DLL)
SHELL32.DLL
USER32.DLL
WINMM.DLL

All are in Windows\System in Win98. The most likely suspects are the
first four especially comctl32.dll and gdi32.dll.
