1 GB of RAM is only displaying 768mb in system properties

I installed 1 gb pc2100 RAM (2x512) 1 year ago and it has run fine uo until a couple of weeks ago. System properties is only displaying 768 mb. I have checked in bios and 1 of the sticks of ram is only showing as 256mb, any ideas what is hogging the missing 256mb?

Nothing is "hogging" it. Something is broke.
Reseat the RAM, perhaps swap slots.
