Can anyone tell me how to get rid of this frustrating
jumble of stuff? Every time I type 1E0 or 1E9, etc., in a
cell it converts to 1.00E+00. No matter how I format the
cell it either remains 1.00E+00 or it converts to a whole
pile of zeros plus a 1. I don't want to have to type the
apostrophe before the number format 1E7, etc.

Thank you.

Hi Connie,

You say that this happens no matter how you format the cells.

That is odd, but may be a version issue. In my Excel 2000 if I format
a cell to TEXT (Format - Cells - Number - Text), then enter 1E9 (for
example) it correctly accepts the input as text (not a value equal to
1 x 10^9).

What version are you using? Obviously it must work differently to
Excel 2000, but perhaps someone can advise more specifically.

I may be reading this wrong but when you said:
I assume that you mean formatting AFTER entering the text. You must format
the cell BEFORE making the entry for the formatting to have the desired
effect.

Okay, I tried it again. When it was 1.00E+00 I formatted
the cell to Text. It converted to a bunch of zeroes plus
a 1. But if I retyped it as 1E0 (or whatever the case may
be) it then remained as I typed it. It just was
converting it. I had to retype them. Grrrr-rr-r-rrrr!

Thank you for replying
