Running 64 bit Windows 7 with Office Home 2007. Have Windows Essentials
running. Does Windows Essentials use shut down Defender use? I cannot turn
Defender on.

Hello:

I'm fairly sure what you're calling Windows Essentials is really called
Microsoft Security Essentials or commonly abbreviated as MSE.

Microsoft Security Essentials contains much of the Windows Defender
functions within it. Hence, if you have MSE working and it's regularly
updating, it's as if you are receiving the protections of a Windows Defender
too.
