Windows defender versus client protection

I tried to install "Windows defender" without succes.
In the mean time I foud out that "defender"is not compatible with "Windows
Security Essentials". OK so far.
However, the message I get during installation of "defender" is, that I
should de-install "Client Protection".
I searched everywhere in my computer but I cannot find anything that relates
to client protection.
Can anyone tell me what it is? (I use XP-home on a regular desktop, not a
server).

windows defender is part of microsoft security essentials, and MSE will turn
it off
If you have MSE you do not need windows defender so don't work your brains
trying to install it because you do not need it since it is a part of MSE

this might not show up because i did it through a newsreader so i am going
to type it again.
Windows Defender is part of Microsoft Security Essentials and MSE will shut
it off if it is already installed.
Do not try to install something that you have already in MSE

To expand on and support what robinb has already told you, that is,
the protection of Windows Defender is included in Microsoft Security
Essentials, the "Client Protection" referenced in the error is the
core of Microsoft Security Essentials, Forefront Client Protection,
and Windows Live OneCare, hence the generic reference to "client
protection."

I also have Windows Security Essentials and cannot get Windows Defender to
turn on - all attempts online to either re-instal or switch on come to
nothing, though all scans show no problem. The performance of the computer is
at times lousy, and is not uncommon for the internet to freeze making it
impossible to close the page(s) without switching the computer off.
Microsoft is willing, however, to sell me an upgrade to Windows 7.
