Weird problem with Office 2010 help browser

Hi All,

Yes, I do know there is an Office group. I am here because
there is a lot of smart folks on this group.

I have a customer with Office 2010. She likes the "?"
help window. When she clicks on certain searches, the
help window browser tries to open Notepad.

Figured out what is going on. In the help window, when you
search on something, you get back a list of links. It is
the links that is the issue. Some will open help window
browser and others will not (try to open in Notepad).

There is a pattern to what will and won't open. URL
that end normally, like

http://www.gcflearnfree.org/word2010/21.2

http://office.microsoft.com/client/helppreview14.aspx

will open correctly in the help browser window.

URLs that have all kinds of crap on the end, slashes, question
marks, question marks with comments after them will not work.
Instead they try to open Notepad. Here are some examples:

http://office.microsoft.com/redir/R...&queryid=8a12256d-af21-4ee7-99a8-5d3d07434c74

http://office.microsoft.com/redir/X...&queryid=8a12256d-af21-4ee7-99a8-5d3d07434c74

http://www.gcflearnfree.org/word2010/21.2/

I do believe this is bug in Office 2010. If the help browser
window can not figure out what the extension is, it defaults
to Notepad.

I can not tell if the help browser window is using the registry
to find its association. I do not think that it is, as it does
not open up the system default browser on the links that are
clean.

Anyone know of a work around for this?

Many thanks,
-T

I don't know a workaround using Office Help, but the non-working extra
long links should work if you remove everything from the question mark
(?) on, to the right.

IOW, this link...:
http://office.microsoft.com/redir/R...&queryid=8a12256d-af21-4ee7-99a8-5d3d07434c74

....if the ? and everything after it is removed, is this:
http://office.microsoft.com/redir/RZ102673170.aspx

.....which should work, but I don't know a way to auto-adjust it from
within the Help utility.

I have been going into the "properties" of the links and copying them
into the clipboard. Then pasting them into <win><R> run dialog and
they open perfectly.

The problem is that this method is too complicated for the user.
