Unbelievably Windows Vista disables Youtube playback by default

I could not believe that a brand new PC with Vista ultimate could not
play Youtube video even after doing the flash download from adobe!

Then reading up on this it seems to be a common problem without an
obvious fix, yet microsoft's help page doesnt seem to have a help page
on it afaics.

I am beginning to suspect that Microsoft is up to their old DOS days
tricks, where 'DOS isnt ready until 123 wont run'. i.e. since
Youtube is now owned by their chief competitor Google, why not make it
very difficult if not impossible to view Youtube content in a new
Vista PC? What a delicious marketing ploy! Ballmer must be sweating
buckets of joy over that one!

I am hoping Google brings some kind of legal action over this unfair
business practice of Microsoft's.

check out this cryptic registry hack fix, just to get Youtube to run!

unfrickinbeliievbla!!!!

-----------------------------------------------

the problem i found was a missing registry item {D27CDB6E-
AE6D-11cf-96B8-444553540000}

if you go to this site http://www.adobe.com/support/flashplayer/downloads.html

then download the Windows Flash Player 9 ActiveX control content
debugger (for IE) (EXE, 1.22 MB) run the installation & it will put
this missing registry item in.

then the youtube videos should work with IE7

NOTE: When i ran the installation i ran into an error but i chose to
ignore it and let it run anyway. Also if you run a registry cleaner
program make sure you exclude (so it does not strip this reference)
{D27CDB6E-AE6D-11cf-96B8-444553540000} otherwise you will have to re-
install the above or manually put them back in.

Not only unbelievable, but completely untrue.

YouTube works perfectly (ignoring the quality/content of the videos
themselves) on Vista, using either Internet Explorer or Firefox as a
browser. Don't misinterpret some obscure problem on your installation
with an OS-wide problem. It simply isn't any such thing.

I find it unbelieveable also as my PC with Vista Ultimate 64 plays You
Tube videos w/o any problems and has from day one.

Both sites play perfectly here.
Some wacky videos at heavy.com!
Thanks for the link.

I couldn't believe it either especially when it's not true on any
installation I've done. Still I suppose it's more fun to believe in obscure
conspiracy theories than it is to think maybe there is just something wrong
with how your system is working.

I find it totally believable - that you have messed with your system and
can't get it back to normal. Now you have to find someone else to blame for
your short comings.

Youtube videos play fine.

YouTube plays just fine on Vista. Perhaps you have run a registry editor and it cleaned more than you wanted. This is the problem with registry editors. I would stay away from them. You should not trash Microsoft for your problems. You have probably done something with your system and the machines problems are of your own making. If you don't know how to perform a given function on your computer you should do what I do; ask someone who does have the knowledge. Do a clean install of your OS. If you don't know how to do this please ask someone to help you.

Stop spreading FUD. YouTube works perfectly in Vista, right out of the
box.

this is a brand new hp m8020 vista ultimate pc and youtube DID NOT
play 'right out of the box' and still wont play after multiple
attempts at downloading from adobe, and it is not the only instance of
this behavior according to some googling i have done

from what I have read, apparently the default security settings in IE7
on Vista Ultimate prevent youtube video from running,

That should be easy to fix up if that's the case, since you can edit those
settings...
What does Adobe say about this?
Is your system running at this point?
There's some magic 'register flash9b.ocx' or somesuch steps I've seen people
need to do when Flash doesn't install itself fully correctly. =\

Flash is cool. It does good things and is a great tool for a lot of people.

I would strongly suggest you take this to Adobe. If there is some bug in
Microsoft's code somewhere, the Adobe people would most easily be able to
identify it.

What? YouTube runs fine on Ultimate here and I did not apply any reg hacks
or change any IE security settings to get it to do so... as others have
responded... sounds like a configuration issue on your box.

Many people complain that youtube videos don't play under vista. I had the same problem and resolved it. I have two users on my home vista box: an admin and a standard user (SU). Youtube videos played fine under admin but not under SU. On setting the protected mode to "Off" in Internet explorer- click near the bottom of IE window, the videos played fine.

Hope this helps - explains why some could and some couldn't but not the level of vitriol.

I'm migrating from Xp to Vista and there are alot of these type of issues - Trusted locations for excel files etc. Just part of the fun.

Here's another fix that helped, without changing IE settings:
