Simplified logon

I am the sole user of a computer running Windows XP (SP2). I used to be
able to get my computer to boot-up and go directly to my desktop without
having to go through the login procedure but after the installation of new
software, somehow I now have to enter my user name each time I boot-up. Not
a big deal I guess but, in my case, totally unnecessary and therefore
annoying.
I searched high and low on how to avoid this but I can't remember how I did
it the first time. Can anyone help?

While a third-party tool (or registry change) can resolve this, the reason
it probably happened in the first place is you installed ASP.net runtime via
Windows Update, which added a new user account. At least that's usually the
reason it happens. :)

Revisit the Windows Update site to see if there is an update to .Net
Framework 1.1. Otherwise to go back to an auto login it can be done easily
either through a few manual steps or using TweakUI.

1. Go to Start | Run and type in: control userpasswords2 | Ok.

2. On the Users tab, clear the Users Must Enter A User Name And Password To
Use This Computer check box and then click OK.

3. In the Automatically Log On dialog box that appears, type the user name
and password for the account you want to be logged on each time you start
your computer.

You can accomplish the same thing by:

Download and install TweakUI for XP and use its auto logon feature.

Lastly you can add the Dialog box that comes up when running control
userpasswords2 to the Control Panel with the following tweak:

Add Control User Passwords2 to the Control Panel (Line 1)

Do : Start>Run>CMD>type "control userpasswords2">OK.
On User tab clear "Users must use.....".

appreciative of the explanation of the likely cause. It will help in the
