New to this . Not sure if I should have posted here or in Win XP Prof. Anyway, here is my question :

My Navy son gave me a computer with Win XP Prof. The guy he got it off of is long gone on another tour. There is no disks or anything with this. I just have what information I got from the Belarc scan. It has the key number on it. I was told I would have to find out from Microsoft if I could get a replacement disk. How do I find out if the guy "Pat" is using it on his new computer because if he isnt then how could I buy from Microsoft and replacement disk. Its not that I dont want to buy another Win XP Prof but why do it if the guy Pat isnt using this one. Hope this makes sense.

If you have no CD or documentation, you most likely do not have a
licensed copy of windows XP.
The exception may be if the manufacturer had a hidden partition on the
computer with the restore data.

Do you know if it is the original installation of Windows XP that came
with the computer?
Or did he upgrade to Windows XP?

Unfortunately often in these type of situations it is a stolen
license.
See if this applies:

I not sure if the guy upgraded or what. I will have to ask my son the next time I talk to him. I know that my son has boughten two different computers in the last fours year and he got them at the computer store in the mall. In the Navy they have nothing else to spend their money on but computer stuff and music cds. Thanks again.
