For most of the errors encountered you can do something really simple to
correct the errors you encounter when running the windows defender program on
a windows 2000 platform.
1. Go to the CONTROL PANEL]
2.If you have administrator access, you will be able to acess the
ADMINISTRATOR OPTIONS folder
3. Once you have accessed the ADMINISTRATOR OPTIONS folder, you should
access the SERVICES shortcut
4.Find the windows defender name in the scroll down menu, and double click it
5.Click the DEPENDINCIES tab and right down the 2 programs it list as
dependincies
6. Go back to the services menu and find these 2 programs, set the operation
of the windows defender and theses 2 programs to automatic
7.Restart your computer
8.Run windows defender from the start menu
9.VIOLA!!!!

Thank you for posting this informative thread fiXER.

It will be interesting to see if this actually works without further
problems for the bulk of the Win2K users trying to get to the Final
Defender release... let us know your testing results here. I'd suspect
problems could develop with further use, so I'd sure keep another
AntiSpyware around as a backup if you do try this technique people.
Remember that just because this version is labeled as "Final" doesn't mean
they won't be working on GUI/Engine updates, so it could break for you now
or in the future unexpectedly.
