formatting hard drive

Can anyone tell me how to format my hard drive with xp i
have tried doing so with windows 98 startup disk to get
dos prompt but will not allow me to format C drivw.

You'll have to boot with the 98 startup disk and first use fdisk to delete
the partition. Then create a new one and then format that.

Alternatively boot with the XP CD and you can do the same thing with screen
prompts.
