favorites disappear from IE 6.0

my favorites have disappeared from IE 6.0
more specifically, i can't add or even access them from IE.
for now i have made 'favorites toolbar' so i can access them.

Last time this happened, i gave up and just reinstalled everything on my PC
like it fresh off the assembly line.
Id rather not do that again.

I also seem to be experiencing an error.
"error 1606. could not access network location %userprofile%\favorites\"
when i try to install anything now. don't know if these problems are related
tho.
i tried microsofts solution:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;886549
and nothing worked.

thanks for any help you can give

Have you checked the Registry?

You can change the value of Favorites in the Registry in these
two keys: (ignore the second if the value is not there)

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell
Folders

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User
Shell Folders

For Windows 2000/XP:
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User
Shell Folders]
Set the Favorites path to : %USERPROFILE%\Favorites

The above should be a REG_EXPAND_SZ value, not REG_SZ

i used the link i supplied, and foolowed the directions explicitly, and to no
avail...
it looks like the same/similar instructions.

i went back last night after this posting and tried MS's solution again
and things looked differently in the Reg.
So i tried it again and now i get my favorites back.
What kind of 'witchcraft' makes this happen to begin with?
( witchcraft i used as a joke)

thanks for your help and time...
