winxp services deleted - please help

Many of the winxp services such as "plug and play" seem to have been
deleted, i.e., under services under computer management, i see only
about 15 services and all are Nero, Office, Canon camera etc - I dont
see standard xp services such as plug and play. As a result I am
having a lot of problems (my device manager, netwrok connections etc
are all empty, the audio doesnt work - sound card isnt getting
recognized etc.) For example, msinfo32.exe says "Can't collect
information" for all the devices.

How can I fix this?

I am not sure about the exact source of the problem - my brother was
using my system and it seems he manually registered a dll file
(ole.dll or something) since mcafee auto update wasnt working. (mcafee
is working fine now though) - he mentioned that he had to reboot the
system after which windows defender or something said that some of the
services will have to be deleted.

Use System Restore to return the machine to a sound
condition. Click Start / Help and look for help on "System
Restore" if unsure how to do this.

I tried that. System Restore doesnt work either. Says system restore
can not protect your computer.

Could you post the exact, verbatim message when you attempt
a System Restore?

It is:
"System restore is not able to protect your computer. Please, restart
your computer and run system restore again."

And restarting the system doesnt help at all. The same message is
displayed.

You could try a manual System Restore - see here:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307545
If this does not help then a Windows "Repair" installation may
fix the problem. You launch it by booting the machine with your
WinXP installation disk.
