running adsiedit shows configuration container 4 x (all duplicates

running adsiedit shows configuration container 4 x (all appear to be
duplicates )

just noticed after running domain prep & forest prep error free (not sure if
it was like that before or not. 3 other domain controllers show only one
instance of configuration container. onlything different about this dc is it
is also running exch 2003

any idea if this is normal or if not how to fix it ? I am not experiencing
any symptoms with my domain

It seems to me that I can just select the extras and choose the "remove"
option - correct ? ( I am guessing somebody previously for some reason or
other added the duplicates)

When creating an ADSI Edit mmc, you have to manually add the partition/continer. When adding, you have to select the drop-down box under the Well Known Naming Context for which partition/container you want to see. Apparently someone must have added the Config container multiple times. You can remove the duplicate ones, and add the ones that you do want to see.

If you need to see the DomainDnsZones and ForestDnsZones partition, you have to manually specify type in under the DN field one of the following (using the example of domain.com as your AD domain name):

dc=domaindnszones,dc=domain,dc=com
or
dc=forestdnszones,dc=domain,dc=com

I hope that helps.

Curious, what exactly will you be doing in ADSI Edit? It is a direct editor into the partitions, and any operations you perform can be destructive without turning back unless you have a System State backup to restore it with a non-authoratative restore.
