Requirement: Reducing bandwidth consumption; Can we use 'Citrix metaframe' for it?

We have a case where it is required to reduce the bandwidth consumption
between the clients and the server. I heard that we can use 'Citrix
metaframe' for this purpose, but not sure about it(Unfortunately, I am
not aware of it!). Can anybody give more details about how exactly we
can fulfill our requirement?

Citrix (MetaFrame) Presentation Server has policy settings that you can apply
to any part of, or the entire user session, i.e. you can restrict the entire
session to x number of Kbps (a setting of your choice), and also limit items
like printing, file copy, com port redirection, audio... each to a certain
maximum you determine is best.

Over my WiFi Bridge I limit all sessions to a maximum of 176Kbps, and limit
printing to 56Kbps. Our normal session bandwidth usage is around 20Kbps, but
some tasks do cause the session to consume more bandwidth, i.e. flash
animation, image manipulation, scanning... This allows me to determine an
acceptible max that will allow everyone to do their job w/o one user
saturating the pipe.

Another way to do this is via a PacketShaper, like packeteer. THis however
is very expensive (even more than MetaFrame in many cases) and limits based
on type of traffic, i.e. you can give 20% of the pipe to SMTP, 20% to
HTTP/HTTPS and 60% to ICA.

The Citrix Policies in Presentation Server 4.0 have helped a lot in my
situation.

W/o Citrix, or another product w/ similar capabilities, you can only try to
turn off bells and whistles that users may not need, but this still may not
solve your problem.

Have you determined what is consuming your bandwidth? Sometimes print jobs
to client printers are the problem, and this can be fixed with a product made
specifically for printing, i.e. ThinPrint, triCerat Simplify Printing,
Provision Networks Print-IT...

Requirement for who? A US company that has out source to you in India? Now
you want unemployed US workers to do your research for you?

We simply limit each client IP to a "bandwidth profile" with a shaping
device from etinc. Its about $4K and it works exceptionally well. We
use it to control access to our web server as well as internal
activities
