Hello Joseph,

WindowsXP
You can repair Windows Defender.

First exit WD, click the down arrow to the right of the white question mark
in blue circle and then click Exit Windows Defender;
using Add or Remove Programs in Control Panel.

Click WD and click Change. Click Next, and then
click Updªte.

Reboot

If you still have the same problem, try this:
First exit WD,

click the down arrow to the right of the white question mark
in blue circle and then click Exit Windows Defender;

using Add or Remove Programs in Control Panel.

Click WD and click Support Information and click
Repair.

Reboot.

Do you have Windows Live OneCare installed?

Let us know how it works ºut

Here's what is happening:

Windows Live OneCare incorporates the functionality of Windows Defender,
while substituting its own User Interface (UI.)

Consequently, with OneCare installed, Windows Defender will be disabled.

This does not mean that you are not protected--in fact, you are far better
protected than with simply Windows Defender alone.

I do wish they could manage to convey this interaction a bit more
successfully to the customers, though!

So--what you are seeing is normal. If at some later point you uninstall
OneCare, Windows Defender will remain available and be re-enabled.

Try this first:

go to the Microsoft Security portal:

www.microsoft.com/security/portal

and download the 32-bit definitions for Windows Defender, in the right column

Just applying those may fix the issue.

A further question is whether autoupdate is working on your system--did you get the last round of security updates? If not that is a priority to get fixed.

If you watch the announcements group here, you can see when automatic
updates are next issued, and see if it updates on its own--good luck!
