Windows XP opening files which program??

hi all,
can anyone help me with opening files sent as attachments from a laptop running windows 98 ive downloaded adobe 6 which has solved some of the problems but i still cant open some files sent from hotmail,im running xp pro, the only name on the file is attach 3,is there a program that will open all types of files?
the files are from a trusted sorce

Can you tell me the full name of the file, as we need to know the type of file it is. I should be able to help then :)
 
If it doesn't have an extension, try to open it in Notepad, it might look like junk once you open it, but you might be able to tell the right program.

If it's a "trusted source" can you just email them back and ask them what program they're from?
