master volume control not working

i recently formatted my computer and reinstalled windows
but my master volume control does not seem to work at all
to control the level of the sound, any suggestions or
fixes?
 
1. Open XP's "Help and Support" program.
2. In the Search box type: TROUBLESHOOTER , and hit enter.
3. Click on "Sound Troubleshooter".

it's not that my sound isn't working, it's just that i'm
not able to adjust the volume of the sound through the
master volume control. I can adjust it(volume) through my
speaker's volume and such but it would be nice to be able
to get the master volume control to work as well
