How do I search a range for dates some ceels of which may be empty

Which function can I ues to search a spreadsheet range, some cells of which
may be empty, to return dates entered in the spreadhsheet? I have tried
VLOOKUP, HLLOKUP, MATCH and DGET but they do not like empty cells.
