Frustrated

So i've just received a word document, but , where the spacing should be,
there are squares (like wingdings). There is no formatting done to the
document and I have no idea how to remove them! It's driving me insane. Does
anybody know how to remove them?

These could be non-printing characters, to learn more about them, see
http://word.mvps.org/faqs/formatting/NonPrintChars.htm.
Press the ¶ button on the Standard toolbar to hide the
nonprinting marks.
If they are not these, ie they are the Wingding "empty square" can you
select one, copy into Find and replace with a space?

Hope this helps.

Yes, i tried the find and replace and word does not seem to recognize it
exists. I also tried pressing that button on the standard toolbar as
initially i had assumed they had something to do with the formatting, but it
didn't work. Hence my frustration!

Some fonts (especially some of the cheap clones that came with early
versions of CorelDRAW) do use awful big empty squares (instead of the usual
dots) to represent spaces.

Try changing the font - it may have originally been done in a font that you
don't have.
