Computer hangs when put on "Stand By" mode

Hi
I have a Dell inspiron 5100 notebook
when my computer goes or is put into "stand by" mode it hangs. I have to forciby switch off the power after that

Why is it happening?
Any pointer will be helpful

Did you configure the keyboard or mouse to exit standby?

I have a Dell Inspiron 8200 and I am having the same problem. I recently reformatted my hard drive, and ever since whenever I close my notebook to put it in standby, the system lags so bad upon return that it is unuseable. I also have to forceably shut down with the power button. Anyone know how to fix this? Thanks
