XPH Freezing on Log-in

I'm unable to log into my PC. At the XPH log-in screen, when I enter my user
password, the system freezes up. I've tried rebooting several times, but
each time I encounter the same problem. This problem has just started today.
What can I do?

Work in safe mode?
Work with other user accounts?
 
Tried via Safe Mode, which allowed me to get in and restart, then get in via
Regular Mode, but while doing some maintenance in Control Panel, it frooze
again, so I powered down.
