XP Pro upgrade from xp home ed. ERROR -- cyclic redundancy error

Usually a CRC failure means faulty media, but it could be the drive too --
is this a newly-purchased CD?
 
no it's an older (designed for win xp...) dell laptop.

it's now stuck on looking for the setup progrma to finish installation
(which it can't install) and will not boot into the old win xp home ed.
any help on the orginial fix OR gett'n it back to load xp home ed.
also appreciated.
i followed Q article 311755 but to no vail. same problem persists.
 
the setuperr.log also contains:

sxs.dll: syntax error in manifest or policy file
"d:\i386\asms\10\msft\windows\gdiplus\gdiplus.man" on line 4.


and:
the signature for windows xp professional upgrade is invalid. the error
code is 800b0100

no signature was present in the subject.

Then no *wonder* it doesn't work! Let me guess, you bought this from someone
on eBay, right?

1) It is illegal to sell OEM software without the system it was sold
with.
2) Dell BIOS-lock their CDs, meaning that they will only install on the
system they were sold with - AND NO OTHER.
3) OEM discs can only be used to perform a clean install - *NOT* an
upgrade.

If you wish to reinstall you must format and reinstall clean. I hope you
backed up your data!

I would also report the seller to eBay and the abuse departments of whatever
online payment services they used (e.g. PayPal, Nochex, WorldPay). You are
in possession of illegal software.

It is *possible* that the cd is bad, but it is far more likely that it
is your laptop's hardware. Most failures to install an operating system
are because of 1) bad RAM; 2) bad hard drive; 3) bad cd-rom drive; 4)
bad motherboard. You can test the RAM with Memtest86+ from
www.memtest.org. Test the hard drive with a diagnostic utility from the
drive mftr. Test the CD-ROM drive by a) making sure it is recognized in
the BIOS and b) try booting with a live Linux CD like Knoppix. If this
is a bit too much (and there is no shame in admitting if it is), take
the laptop to a computer repair shop (not a BestBuy or CompUSA type of
store).
