This is my first visit to this Forum, so please forgive me if this question has been asked and answered before
I have XP Professional, bought as an upgrade, so I also have W98 partitions
Back in July my computer was damaged by a lightning strike and my insurance company arranged for it to go to their sub-contracted "experts", rather than the manufacturer. They provided replacements for three modems which had been destroyed and also provided a new 40 Gb hard drive. They installed W98 and XP on this drive from discs supplied by me, but they did not install my antivirus - even though I sent a Norton System Works disc
As you might guess, as soon as I started downloading updates for XP it was infested with worms! I've zapped those,
but have had several attacks of a different nature. When I first went to the computer in the morning I would find messages such as, "Your new hardware has been installed and you need to reboot." or "Disc "X" is very low on free space, click here to delete unused files". If I had had (say) 1,250 Mb free on a 5 Gb drive, I now had nearly nothing
Needless to say, no new programmes could be seen, but a lot of space had been used up. This has happened on several occasions
When the partition became very large, I deleted it, created a new one and installed XP again. With all the system packs and upgrades, this becomes a long job. I created Restore Points after each group of downloads; also after reloading various items of software. After an attack, however, I find these have disappeared and there is only a single restore point, dated for the previous night.
I have considered using the System Restore facility based on a floppy disc. I understand, however, that this would wipe the complete hard drive and then reinstall XP. This would mean that my other operating systems, Data partition, Backups partition, Photograps etc. would all disappear... No Thanks
The computer is a Dell XPS R450. Pentium 2, 40 Gb and original 17 Gb hard drives, with 384 RAM
This partition was created on 13th February, but I note today that Program Files is dated 3rd March
This is a couple of days before the attack on the night of 4th / 5th March. It contains directories bearing the same date - Cosmi, Coupons and Offers, and in Common Files Borland Shared, Cosmi (again) and Auto Update
Oh for the DOS of old which had a DELTREE command
Is anyone in a position to advise me, please,
1. How to get rid of these invaders, an
2. How to keep them out
I have System Suite 5 installed on this partition and Norton System Works 2003 is also available
