I am trying to set up a home network between 2 computers. The main
computer is XP the other is win98se.
When i set up the 98 one it sets it up I see the network and all the
files on the 98 machine. It also puts a little network icon on the
taskbar.
When I try to set up the XP machine, It goes thru the wizard, but then
there is no network listed on the machine that shows either the XP
machine or the 98 machine.
The XP machine show..the network name HOME, but no files listed for
the XP machine or the 98 machine. The xp machine seems to be the
problem it is not setting up the network properly when the wizard
runs.
I have read many online articles about this but none mention this
particular problem. They do mention a listing on start menu of MY
Network, I do not have this item in start menu.
Anyone with any ideas.. TIA

Simple solution - don't use the wizard. It does very little anyhow. If you
have XP SP2 and are using the Windows firewall then create an exception for
file and printer sharing. If earlier version then disable the Windows
firewall.

If using third party firewall then disable it with caution to test file
sharing until you learn to create packet filter rules or to tell the
firewall that your subnet is trusted.

maybe you missed some minor detail on the setup.

I would suggest simply setting up the network again...obviously starting
with the XP machine as the 'Host' (shared internet connection) and then
creating a setup disk to use on the 98 machine.

Make sure that the computer 'names' you use in the connection are the actual
registerd names on each system and they are unique.

Did you set the share settings correctly for the folders you want to share?

Did XP create a new network connection for this purpose?

Check any AV software you have running on both machines, including security
center setting on XP if you have SP2 to make sure they allow the connection.

With regard to the My Network Icon on the start menu:
Start->right click on start menu->properties->advanced->scroll down in start
menu items and make sure my network places is tiked.

Hope this helps.

Phil.
