Hi,

I am trying to help a friend setup wireless networking between her XP
Home desktop and
her Win2000 laptop. Can her XPH - with the cable connection be the
file/print/network server?

XPH has internet sharing enabled, so the XPH has DHCP enabled - correct?

Can the 2000 machine be setup to log in to an XPH in the workgroup?

Thanks,

Bill

Bill,

Yes, a computer can run WinXP Home, and act as a server to a computer running
Win2K or any other operating system.

More about file sharing, between all different versions of Windows:

You can "connect" several XP Home machines in a "Workgroup" network and they
can share resources (files, printers, etc.), but XP Home boxes can't be
servers, nor can the act as a client in a domain.

XP Home does not have a Dynamic Host Control Protocol (DHCP) server in it as
XP Home can't act as a server. What you need to do is this:

Internet comes into house via Cable or DSL
Cable or DSL connect to either a Cable or DSL modem
Router (a.k.a. Gateway) is connected to the Cable or DSL modem.**
** Most routers can also act as a DHCP server and even contain a
Firewall (you may have to enable DHCP though)
Individual PC's connect to router**
** Each PC has its TCP/IP property setting set to "Obtain IP
Addresses Automatically" (property dialog of the network connection)

No Chuck, that's incorrect. File sharing and acting as a server are 2
different things. XP Home is NOT a server. It does not have a web server
included, it can't act as a DHCP server, it can't act as a domain server, it
can't log into a domain as a client of that network, etc.

XP Pro can't be a domain server, either.

However, I think that Bill's asking about a computer being a server
for file and printer sharing. As you say, Scott, XP Home can do that.

Yes, XP Home does have a DHCP server, if you enable Internet
Connection Sharing as Bill said he has. It will assign TCP/IP
properties to the 2000 machine.

Bill, the 2000 machine can't "log into an XPH", but it doesn't need
to. It can share the XPH machine's Internet connection, files, and
printers.

Scott,

I guess it depends upon your definition of server. WinXP Home runs the server
service, just as WinXP Pro or Win2K does.

The OP mentioned "file/print/network server" between a XP Home desktop and a
Win2000 laptop. The XP Home OS will provide file and printer sharing. It won't
provide a DHCP server, nor will XP Pro, as a separate service - but XP Home WILL
run ICS, and provide DHCP as part of ICS.

And an XP Home system can be accessed just as easily as an XP Pro system, in a
workgroup.

Hi,

I'm sorry that the incorrect wording of my question created an argument.
I was trying toask -
and I've gotten the answer to - two questions.

A> Is DHCP included in XP Home internet sharing...and

B> Can W2K be assigned an XP home workgroup to access files.

Again - sorry for asking vague questions, and sorry that the semantics
caused such a problem.

Bill

Yes Chuck, I think we both are on the same page. I wanted to clarify to the
OP the difference between a server and file sharing. I did mention that
connecting and sharing resources would be possible in a workgroup.
