XP computer won't turn off manually

My system will not turn off when I press the power button. It shuts
down from the start menu fine, and it turns on fine, but I can't turn
it off manually. I realize this is a safety feature to protect the
computer from random 'accidental' shut-downs, but when my computer
gets totally locked up, and I would normally be forced to turn it off
myself, I have to resort to unplugging it (as the ctrl-alt-del menu no
longer has reboot as an option...). It would be great if someone
could give me a way to remedy this situation. Thanks in advance!

Have you checked the Control Panel->Power Options->Advanced tab and selected
what you want your system to do when you press the power button?

you may have to go in and check some of the settings in
your bios. There is usually an option for what you want
it to do when you press the power buton on your computer

The computers I have had for about 3 years can be shut off by
holding the power button in for about 5 to 10 seconds. It is a
safety feature to stop accidental shutoff.

Try this.
Pushing and hold the start button for about 5-10 seconds. My
last 3 computers shuts down manually this way. It is a safety way
so not to accidentally shut down when bumped.
