Can I Outlook be set up on a peer-to-peer LAN, 5 users, without having to
use a separate stand-alone e-mail server? 2 are using XP, 2 are using W98
and the other W2000.

And Net Folders uses email, so it doesn't work unless the users can send
messages to each other, either with an on-site or Internet-based mail
server.

You can use Outlook on individual PCs in a workgroup, but there is no
native
way to share data between them. NetFolders exists for versions prior
to OL2002, but it was buggy and unreliable and I don't recommend it.

http://www.slipstick.com/outlook/share.htm may help....
