Word crashes while opening .doc file

I have the trial version of Microsoft Word that I downloaded from the
Microsoft.com website. When I try to open a .doc file in this trial version,
I keep getting an error message that the file does not exist or that the file
is corrupt. I do not understand how the file could be corrupt if I had just
created in that same Microsoft Word program. Also, the virus scan runs
everytime I try to open a file. Is there a way to turn off the virus scan
and open a .doc file from the trial version of Microsoft Word? Please help
me out if you can.
