I have a user that when he receives or sends word documents as attachments
the, the documents come in as a .dat file. It is not in rich text format.
It is in html format and also he has checked use word as the email editor.
I unchecked that selection but he said that he still is sending is as a .dat
file. Any clues?

Check the contact (or personal address book) records for the person(s) s/he
is trying to send to and see if the always send in Outlook Rich Text is
checked. (should be unchecked)

How do I go about doing that?

For a contact record - Go to the contacts folder. Open the contact record
that the user is sending mail to. Double click on the email address. You
will either have a dropdown or checkbox (depends on version of Outlook).

For a personal address book (*.pab) record - select ctrl + alt + b to open
the address book. select personal address book from drop down. go to
record in question. right click and select properties. to the tab that has
the display name/e-mail address. checkbox should be right below e-mail
address.

Is the sender using Outlook 98 by any chance? I have not been able to open
anything but plain text or full HTML from Outlook 98. Rich Text messages
come in blank with a .dat attachment. All included attachments are also
..dat.
