WinXP does not recognize CD/DVD write capability

I have an external USB Iomega Super DVD drive. When I plug it into the USB,
Win XP recognizes it as a regular CD/DVD rom drive. The OS is not
recognizing this as a writable drive. The CD/DVD writing software that came
with the hardware also not does recognize this as a writable drive. I do not
experience any problems reading CDs or DVDs using this external drive but,
not able to create new ones.

Is there a registry entry in WinXP that disables CD/DVD write capability?

Thanks for your help.
