Hi
I have a brand new machine, which i built, which I initially installed with
XP Pro, no problems at all. About 6 months ago i uninstalled and installed
win98 for the purposes of using some older software.

now i have come to upgrade to XP PRo using XP Pro upgrade,i get to the bit
where it starts to check the system and just locks up and the screen goes
blank and the keyboard lights stay on, as i mentioned earlier i know it is
compatible with XP, so any ideas what is causing the problem?

Un-install all anti-virus in Windows 98
Check for any spyware programs
Un-install all extra components like printers, scanners, external drives.

upgrades are not a good idea
it's best to perform a clean install...

if you still have a use for win98 at times...
setup your drive with at least two partitions...then install win98 on your
C: drive
and XP on D: dual boot

I uninstalled the antivirus software and anything else which might be a
problem but it still does the same thing?

Who says upgrades are not a good idea? You?

Scan the usernet newsgroups and you will see the number of problems that
people get with UPGRADING to XP for Windows XX. A clean install is less
buggy!

Especially at this stage of the game...Write zero's to the drive and start
over...
This problem could be overcome, but it is not worth the effort.
