Windows XP won't start

I have a Sony vaio desktop with XP on it with drives C-D-F-G. Yesterday while
running adaware my computer froze. I rebooted but could not go past the
welcome screen. Every time I clicked on my user icon I could see for one
second the picture of my desktop and then got back to the screen of windows
logging off. I tried to start the computer in safe mode but it did not work.
I got a message windows root\system32\ntoskrnl.exe file is missing or corrupt.

I hooked my laptop on internet and found a solution proposed by Microsoft to
resolve this problem http://support.microsoft.com/defaul...kb;en-us;314477.
I tried the solution 3 (see below) which is basically the only one I
understood:

1.Start the computer by using your Windows XP CD-ROM. Press any key to boot
from the CD.2.After the setup files are finished loading press R to repair
using Recovery Console.3.When you are in the recovery console, select the
installation to log on to (usually number 1), and then press ENTER.4.Login to
the Administrator account by typing the password for this account, and then
press ENTER.5.At the recovery console command prompt, type the following
command, and then press ENTER:

For Uni-Processor systems: expand cd-rom:\i386\ntoskrnl.ex_
drive:\Windows\system32
For Multi-Processor systems: expand cd-rom:\i386\ntkrnlmp.ex_
drive:\Windows\system32\ntoskrnl.exe

Cd-rom is the drive letter of your CD-ROM drive, and drive is the drive
letter of the hard disk on which windows is installed.6.If you receive a
prompt to overwrite the file, press Y.7.Type exit, and press ENTER at the
command prompt.

The problem is that when I am at step 4 I cannot enter an administrator
password because I do not have any. I used to log to windows by clicking on
my user's icon, i.e. without entering a password. The XP version I got was
already installed on this computer. I tried to press enter, esc, space, 0,
etc but nothing works. After 3 attempts I get kicked out.
Fyi there is no other user's account on my desktop and I don't have XP disks
- only Sony Vaio recovery disks which basically lead me to reinstall XP on C
drive.
Could someone help me and tell me step by step (like Microsoft above - but
with a complete explanation) how to solve this problem without losing my
data. I would GREATLY appreciate. Thanks in advance.

In recovery pressing the enter key is the password if none exist, there's no
other way around it.If recovery isnt an option, then when booting to xp cd,
select, install xp,select, repair this copy. All you loose are windows updates.
Thiers also at microsoft:312149 Once xp is installed and running, you might
want to install recovery console as a bootable option,read:307654
