Windows XP: Registry crash; some directories unaccessible

NTFS harddisk & Windows XP

After a registry crash and an OS reïnstall, some directories seem not to be
accessible anymore. 'Access denied', although I have full access rights
since it is a local installation and I am administrator.
I would like to delete these old directories, but I cannot. I feel that they
slow dowm the system performance and they take too much room.

Should I reformat and reïnstall the whole harddisk or is there another way?

Can anyone help me?
