Windows XP Recovery Console

Help! Will running chkdsk/r from the recovery console wipe
out or erase my saved documents and pictures?

No, chkdsk does not do that. Formatting would do that.

No, it just looks for bad sectors and recovers files.

Yes, ChkDsk /F "just" fixes the file system... without asking you
first. In so doing, it may well discard your data, as may Scandisk on
FATxx. The difference; ScanDisk tells you what it finds, tells you
what it plans to do, and asks you if you want to carry on or back out.

ChkDsk /F "knows best" and just blunders blindly on.
