Windows XP on a TINY PC

S

Still_21

I have been trying to put XP as an upgrade on a TINY PC running on 98SE
It just hangs, at the start.
I cannot get into DOS either, do I push F8? (tried with no avail)
It is a 750mhz but shows x86 type.
Has 192MB ram.
Any ideas
Robin

Possible cause.

I think you cannot upgrade an OEM version of any of the Windows
series. You have to buy the Retail "store' version and install
Windows XP over it.

All OEM versions of Windows can be upgrade, they just can't
be transferred to a different computer. Some software
doesn't qualify for an upgrade to later versions, this
generally applies to academic / student-teacher versions of
OFFICE. Each software package has a unique EULA.

If the version of XP was retail upgrade or full install
package it will upgrade or dual boot on a system running
W98.

Disconnect all external devices. Disable your 39 background apps in SE
before you attempt the upgrade.

You can install an XP upgrade over an OEM 98 or ME (but not over ME) -
you can't use the OEM CD as evidence if you try to do a clean install,

The moment to hit F8 for the menu is immediately the BIOS info goes to
black. But the machine may have a deliberate setting to disable this.
In the Win98, if that still boots, edit the C:\MSDOS.SYS file (a hidden
readonly one, so undo those first), or if it will not boot, boot from
the 98 startup floppy and edit it from that: look for a line
BootKeys=0 and if present change it to
BootKeys=1
and set any
BootDelay=n
up to say
BootDelay=10
to give you 10 seconds in which to hit the F8

If the computer has only W98 installed, F8 should interrupt
the boot if you push it before Windows begins to boot
(immediately on turning the power ON. Or you can push the
key to open the BIOS (F!, F@, F12, F10, or esc or del,
whatever your computer requires). Ten set the BIOS to not
show the splash screen, you'll then see the boot menu.
