Windows XP not shutting down properly - HELP!

We have had the following issues for about 1 week and I do not know what
prompted them:

1.) The computer takes a very long time to shut down/turn off (up to 5
minutes). No error messages appear during this process. (A few weeks ago,
we would get a "nvidia not responding" error, but that is no longer
happening.)

2.) Every time we start the computer, a message appears saying that Windows
was not shut down properly. Then we have the option to start the computer in
safe mode, the last known correct configuration, or normal mode.

3.) When searching for a file, using the "MY COMPUTER" icon, it takes from
3-5 minutes just to see the available drives. A "flashlight" rotates around
on the screen, as if it is searching for the drives, during this long period
of time.

4.) Our anti-virus software (Norton AntiVirus 2003) is no longer scanning
email or updating itself. We haven't been able to correct this.

(As long as #1-3 are fixed, I can deal with reinstalling the AntiVirus
software or whatever I need to do!)

All other features work fine.

I have run virus scans, both through the Norton and the Trend Micro
websites. We are virus free.

Microsoft has pointed us to our computer manufacturer (eMachines) and the
tech support from them has been pitiful. Can someone point me in the right
direction?

Thanks for any help sent my way.

It appears your NVIDIA video card drivers may be corrupt.
Visit http://www.nvidia.com/content/drivers/drivers.asp
and download the latest drivers.

Before installing them, uninstall the old drivers. In your
Control Panel, open the Add or Remove Programs applet
and look for "NVIDIA Drivers" to uninstall.

After installing a fresh set of NVIDIA drivers, right-click on your
Desktop and select Properties > Settings, change the Color
Quality to "Highest (32 bit), then adjust your Screen Resolution
to your liking, then click on Apply.

Note:

If you happen to have a notebook computer, visit the notebook
manufacturer's support website to download the correct video
adapter drivers for your specific notebook model.

Thanks for the response. I have since followed your advice, with no luck. I
still have the same issues as described earlier.

I am thinking of using the restore CD that came with the computer, as the
last resort. Any advice on that?
