Just Another Joe

Hope this is the right newsgroup. My new computer purchased Sept. 2001
came with Windows XP Home. Not a 'recovery' disk, but a full WinXP MS
CD. I didn't like it; took it off, bought a new off-the-shelf Windows
98 SE retail box and installed. All fine.

But now, I've purchased new hardware (Sony DVD burner) that requires
WinXP, not 98/SE. So, I'll need to reinstall XP. It's three years
later; there have been patches, updates, service pack, etc. and SP2
due very soon.

So, what exactly should I install, and in what order? ADVthanksANCE.

Backup everything you can't replace from other sources and then do an
upgrade over the current 98. Uninstall AV, CD burning and other software
flagged by running the compatibility wizard from the XP Home CD. If you
don't have a connection through a router, disconnect the computer from the
internet before running the upgrade.
Steps to follow after the upgrade is complete.
1. Enable the XP firewall.
2. Connect the computer to the intenet.
3. Go to Windows update and apply all critical updates that apply to your
needs and configuration.
4. Install your Anti-Virus application.

In addition, since you will be burning DVD's you should convert to NTFS when
asked. FAT32 will not allow files over 2gig.

Hi Michael, thanks for the replies:

Actually, I'd like to keep my 98SE installation (multiboot). That's probably
a big enough subject for a separate thread, but all tips appreciated :-).

I seem to recall seeing this advice (disconnect from net) back when XP came
out, but can't remember the reason. Yes, I do connect through a router; how
does that help as far as the installation is concerned?

Okay. I was hoping that perhaps there was a one-step after-install procedure
that would apply all patches/updates/sp1, etc. and bring the original XP up to
the current state. I've just received the Microsoft Security Update CD (dated
February 2004); does that apply the others?

Or, if I'm not in a great hurry, would I be better to wait for SP2, as it's
supposed to be available this month? Does applying SP2 also apply all the
previous things?
4. Install your Anti-Virus application.

Thanks.

Might this 'full' XP cd be an oem type?

Hi Mike.

It is an 'oem' CD from Microsoft, but it is not a 'recovery' CD, nor is it
specific to the particular OEM in any way; rather, it is a generic MS 'full'
(not upgrade) original WinXP CD.
