Windows XP ignoring DHCP lease period

Hi,
I have noticed that each time a WinXP Pro machine boots it renews the DHCP
lease even though the lease is set to the standard 8 days. I jave 90
machines, 88 on SP1 plus 2 upgraded to SP2 operating within a Win2000 Domain
and they all get a new lease every day. 60 PCs have onboard Intel PRO VE
NICs and 30 have Realtek NICs. All are clean installs. I thought that one of
the great things about DHCP was that the lease helps reduce network traffic
but if the lease is going to get renewed every day when the PCs boot, I may
as well use static addresses. Is this behaviour normal for XP or do I have a
problem here?

Regards,
Al.

What you're seeing is normal. When started or re-started, the computer will
check with DHCP to ensure that its lease is still valid. The lease lifetime
only comes into play if the computer is continuously left on.

DHCP requests shouldn't be generating THAT much network traffic - if the
network is in good shape and configured well it should pretty much be one
DHCPRequest from the client to the server and one DHCPAck message at boot
time.
