Ok, I'm looking for some advice folks, I'm currently
running Windows Me, I know, I know, its a bit out of date
and I need to update, cos at the very least I need Office
Professional and the current version of office has a
minimum of XP not Me which I currently have, so I have no
choice but to update, so, I like my gaming, and have a few
games that I would like to be able to continue playing
after upgrade. Now back in the year dot when XP came out
there were a few problems in that area, has backward
compatibility improved or has enough time now elapsed for
something to be done about that in terms of a software
sandbox.
Also, I use a second PC also running Me as a sort of
backup machine and comes in handy when a mate comes round
for some head to head shoot the c"£p out each other Quake
fun, or for some starcraft action, but occasionally we get
down and do some serious database design work so that I
can automate alot of my dads paper work for his small
newsagents (small family run shop in the backend of
nowhere) hence the need for Office professional - the only
one with Access - and I definitely need to update. I
never realised before coming home just how much paper work
a small family run shop could produce until I realised
that alot of the paperwork is basically the same no matter
the size of a business, just the smaller the business the
more the paperwork percentage as its the same paperwork no
matter the businesses size. Anyhow I should stop
waffeling and get back to the point.
I want to keep my future options open as I can see in a
few years time expanding - no correction - implementing a
small computer network for the sole use of the shop (a
newer till, storeroom stock scanner, touch screen to log
newspaper / mags arriving / being returned etc etc) but in
the mean time I just want my own private network, that
just happens to be where I also develope the software I
envision running on that future system and also try to
help dad out with what paper work that the system I
currently have is already capable of doing.
Windows Me is what I have now, but what out of the current
line up should I choose as the way forward? What should I
consider, and please don't just give me the links to the
main operating system pages, if they had helped instead of
just confused me further I would have already decided.
The operating system home pages are great to a point but I
was feeling decidedly as though I was suffering
information overload after just a few minutes searching
the Windows small business server site and I can't get the
relevant info out of the XP sites cos it just doesn't seem
to be there.
Help my poor brain and give me the general overview of
what's what with the current system, I've been without a
landline and living in the back end of nowhere, I now have
a landline but am still in the back end of nowhere, please
help
