Windows XP Home Edition shuts down randomly

Is it possible that after visiting certain websites, Windows XP could shut
down randomly? It happened when I was websurfing in the middle of the night.
At first I thought it was a power outage because of the suddenness of the
shutdown. then it did it again and again; sometimes after 2 minutes,
sometimes after 5 minutes, sometimes right after re-booting. Now it's 9pm and
it's been doing this all day. This has never happened to me before.

I don't think I have any viruses, because I have Symantec's LiveUpdate and
it was up to date when this happened, and, after a virus scan, no virus has
been detected.

I'm really desperate. Anyone out there have any ideas? Thanks a lot

One guy suggested a cpu fan fault.. another thing that can do it, especially
when it comes to browsing, is there might be a browser helper app installed
that is causing the crash..

Try this if you don't have it already.. it will identify all helpers
installed.. just download it, and when it runs and shows any helpers,
disable them all, then enable them one by one while starting your browser
(Internet Explorer I suspect)..

It's kind of a long shot since it does it at different times, but it can't
hurt to try it.

Yeah, it definately sounds like a harware fault. When the same thing happened
to me (THIS IS YOUR VERY LAST RESORT AS IT CAN BE COSTLY) I gutted my
computer and found that my processor was being set to a very slow and painful
death by frying. It was going to hell literally, so I ended up having to get
a new processor AND motherboard (It couldn't hurt to upgrade, and I wanted to
be safe so I got the motherboard anyway) after that, no more problems. But
like I said it is a last resort, and I had the same symptoms, it would
restart randomly, first it was hours apart, then it got closer and closer
till it happened about ever 2 minutes, and that was it. I'm not sure if this
will help, but if you know someone who is good with hardware, have them check
out your processor and all that, you never know.

It can be any cause. You need to get the error message. Look in event viewer (type it in help to see how).

Thanks for your posts, David and Kelly -- and everyone else as well. I had
no idea there was an "Event Viewer" where errors were recorded -- and "you're
right," David, it could be anything -- so I found out when I read the details
about the errors in this Event Viewer thingie. I noticed that every time my
computer shuts down, the same 4 errors are recorded: 1. "The Norton
Anti-Virus Auto Protect Service failed to start due to the following error.
The system cannot find the path specified. Event ID 7000. 2. The
ScriptBlocking Service failed to start due to the following error. The system
cannot find the path specified. 3. The Symantec Core LC Service failed to
start due to the following error: the system cannot find the file specified.
4. The follow boot-start or system-start driver failed to load: SAVRTPEL 7026
What I don't know is if any of these errors are related. Other recorded
errors since this problem has been happening go something like this: 1. The
Symantec Network Proxy service terminated with service-specific error
4294967295 (OXFFFFFFFF) Error event ID 7024. 2. Error 1704. An installation
for Norton Systemworks 2003 is currently suspended. You must undo the changes
made by that installation.

Before I uninstalled Norton SystemWorks, the reason Windows XP shut down 3
times in a row at 3:30, 4:00 and 4:50 am (according to the Event Viewer) was
the result of the following error: "The IP address lease 192.168.2.2 for the
Network Card with network address 0040CA2B8BCA has been denied by the DHCP
server 192.168.2.1 (The DHCP Server sent a DHCPNACK message). Event 1002

Is there someplace to look up these errors and then fix what the problem is?

Thanks for the help!
