When you close internet Explorer and it asks you to
disconnect from internet (dialup) and you say yes, the
system freezes and 'Auto Disconnect' box appears in the
system try. Tried running the sfc /scannow and no
better. Applied all the updates from Microsoft and no
better. Any ideas?

This happened to me aswell, the only way i fixed it was to
get a new modem as my modem did not seem to be compatible
with xp. This was just after i had upgraded from ME. The
new modem and associated drivers did the trick. You may
just be able to find a better driver aswell.

I used spybot with all the current updates. I updated
the virus software and did a full scan. I streamlined
the startup group and nothing helped. I did find that if
I did a ctrl-alt-delete and waited about 30 seconds the
task manager did come up. If I selected shutdown it
would come back and say Norton Antivirus not respond, end
task and explorer not responding, end task. It will try
to shut down but hang. I removed Norton, thinking it was
causing a problem, but didn't help.

What does a scan with your current antivirus (using updated definitions)
show? Also, remove all spyware with tools such as Spybot S&D
(www.security.kolla.de) and/or Ad-aware
(www.lavasoftusa.com). After

Updating the modem driver fixed it. Thanks

There was a note on the gateway site that said one of the
updates for XP caused the problem and you needed the new
driver
