Windows XP Desktop

Here is the problem, my windows XP will boot perfectly
but when I click on virtually any ICON on the desk top,
the desk top will blink like it is going to initiate the
program but then returns to the desk top..Actually, I
can't even get to "my computer" or explorer from the desk
top. I tried running the programs from the cmd line and
the same thing happens. I can boot in safemode and use
the desk top perfectly with those programs that will run
in safemode. Any suggestions. I have run several
diagnostic programs checking the register, orphaned DLLs
virus chceks, spyware/trojan checks, etc. Found two
viruses killed them fixed what had been done but still
nothing works. Help.
